Google IO Extended 2015 – Singapore (SG 50 edition)



280 participants from the IT developers’ community had a field day at the Google IO Extended 2015 – Singapore event.  Dr S. P. T. Krishnan, Cofounder of Google Developer Group (GDG) Singapore kicked off the event with his welcome speech on 10 July at the Auditorium in The Matrix. Dr Louis Shue, Cofounder GDG Singapore was the emcee for the day.


Takuo Suzuki, Developer Relations Japan Lead from Google Japan spoke about Google Cast.  He shared the URL on getting started with Google Cast – Bharathi Subramanian Principal Consultant, Auctorizium Pte Ltd and Community Manager of GDG Singapore, spoke next on Adding Cast to Android Application. After the morning break, Takuo Suzuki came back to share about Material Design – the living document on Google design guidelines. This was followed by Mohit Kanwai from Singapore who shared his experience on building a chat application.


When programmers need to incorporate animation in their web design, they have to turn to Flash.  Yohan Totting from GDE Indonesia spoke about Web Animation, a new specification for animated content on the web. After lunch, Yukio Andoh, an UX Researcher and a Virtual Reality experience designer spoke about cardboard virtual reality. Every participant received a Google Cardboard on that day. He shared about the tips of using the virtual reality as follows,

  1. Using a reticle
  2. Using constant velocity
  3. Gaze cues
  4. Leveraging scale
  5. Spatial audio
  6. Maintain head tracking



In addition, Yukio shared about App Indexing, how developers can increase the visibility of their apps, and encourage users to download the apps. Apps can be found in Google Search using App Indexing. Once the app is indexed, mobile users who search for content related to the app can see an install button to that Android app in Search results. This helps app developers to increase the install base.


Right after Yukio, were Guy Newton and Jenny Haliman from Google Singapore, who spoke about “Using ads for monetisation”. An audience aware platform – Admob, was introduced to the participants. Admob brings together technology in a single platform, so developers can gain insights about users through Google Analytics, drive more in-app purchases, and maximize ad revenue.


Last speaker of the day was Minh Nguyen from Google Singapore and he shared about “Promote Your Mobile App in Minutes with AdWords”. AdWords (Google AdWords) is an advertising service by Google for businesses wanting to display ads on Google and its advertising network. The AdWords program enables businesses to set a budget for advertising and only pay when people click the ads. The ad service is largely focused on keywords (Webopedia 2015). Minh Nguyen shared that it is straightforward, easy to use and signing up Google AdWords is free.
